The Purpose of Life
1) Heaven and the Hope of Eternity
As Christians, we believe that this life is not the end.
Earth is temporary, but eternity is forever.
One of the greatest promises Jesus gives to those who believe in Him is the promise of eternal life with God. This promise gives us hope when life is painful, perspective when life feels overwhelming, and a reason to look beyond our present circumstances.
Jesus said:
"In my Father's house are many rooms... I go to prepare a place for you."
— John 14:2
Jesus did not promise that life on earth would always be easy. Instead, He promised that there is a place being prepared for those who belong to Him.

2) Heaven Is Being With God
When we think about heaven, we may picture beautiful streets, golden gates, peaceful landscapes, or a place without suffering. Scripture does give us beautiful images of heaven, but the greatest thing about heaven is not what it contains.
The greatest gift of heaven is God Himself.
Revelation 21 gives us a picture of the future God has prepared:
"God himself will be with them and be their God."
— Revelation 21:3
This is the ultimate hope of Christianity.
We will no longer experience separation from God. We will live in His presence completely and forever.
Everything we long for that is good—love, peace, joy, safety, belonging, righteousness, and wholeness—finds its ultimate fulfillment in the presence of God.
Heaven is not simply a place where we receive good things.
Heaven is being completely with the One who is the source of everything good.

How does knowing that God will one day make all things new change the way I view my current struggles?
3) A World Without Pain
One of the most beautiful promises Scripture gives us is that the things that cause so much suffering in this life will not exist forever.
Revelation 21:4 says:
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore."
Think about what that means.
No more grief.
No more sickness.
No more death.
No more abuse.
No more fear.
No more loneliness.
No more heartbreak.
No more injustice.
No more pain.
The things that have caused us to cry will not have the final word. God does.
The Bible describes a future where God makes all things new.
Revelation 21:5 says:
"Behold, I am making all things new."
Christian hope is not simply that we will escape this world.
It is that God will ultimately make all things new.

What is something in my life that I need to trust God with while remembering that this life is temporary?
4) What Will Heaven Be Like?
Scripture gives us glimpses of what eternity with God will be like, although we cannot fully comprehend everything that God has prepared.
The Bible describes heaven and the new creation as a place of:
God's presence
Perfect peace
Joy
Holiness
Love
Worship
Life
Righteousness
Unity with God's people
Freedom from death and suffering
God's glory
Eternal relationship with Him
Revelation describes God's people worshiping Him and living in His presence. There is no temple in the city because God Himself and the Lamb are its temple (Revelation 21:22).
Revelation 22 continues the picture with the river of the water of life and the tree of life.
The Bible gives us these images because heaven is beyond what our earthly minds can completely understand.
We can imagine it.
We can look forward to it.
But we cannot fully comprehend it.
Paul reminds us:
"What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him."
— 1 Corinthians 2:9
There is something waiting for God's people that is greater than anything we can fully imagine.
5) God's Promise
God promises that He is preparing an eternal future for those who belong to Him.
“I am going there to prepare a place for you.” — John 14:2
God promises His presence.
“God himself will be with them and be their God.” — Revelation 21:3
God promises eternal life.
“Whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
God promises that death will not have the final word.
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.” — 1 Corinthians 15:54
God promises that suffering will not last forever.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” — Revelation 21:4
God promises to make all things new.
“I am making everything new!” — Revelation 21:5
God promises that His people will one day experience His presence completely.
“They will see his face.” — Revelation 22:4
When life feels painful or uncertain, we can hold onto the promise that this life is not all there is.
Closing Prayer
Father God, thank You for giving me the hope of eternity. Thank You that this life is not the end and that You have prepared a place for those who belong to You. When life feels painful, overwhelming, or uncertain, help me remember that You are my ultimate hope.
Help me keep my eyes on You instead of allowing temporary circumstances to define my life. Give me peace when I experience pain, comfort when I experience loss, and faith when I cannot understand what You are doing. Help me look forward to the day when You make all things new.
Thank You that the greatest gift of eternity is not simply a perfect place, but being completely in Your presence.
