Why do I need to be saved?

Every person has done wrong things, whether it’s lying, hurting others, or making choices we regret. The Bible calls this sin.

Sin isn’t just “bad behavior,” but it creates distance between us and God.
God is perfect, and sin separates us from Him. On our own, we can’t fix that separation, no matter how hard we try.

Saved from what?

Because of sin, we are separated from God, not just in this life, but forever.

That separation leads to:

  • Emptiness and disconnection now

  • Eternal separation from God later

So being “saved” means being rescued from that separation and brought back into a relationship with God.

Why did God even make a way?

This is the most important part:
God made a way because He loves us.

He didn’t want robots who were forced to love Him; He wanted a real relationship.
That means giving us a choice to love Him or not.

But here’s the problem:
Even though we have the choice, our sin still separates us from Him. So how could we freely choose Him if we were stuck in that separation?

How did God make a way?

Because God is loving and just, He couldn’t ignore sin, but He also didn’t want to lose us.

So He did something only He could do:
He sent His Son, Jesus.

  • Jesus lived a perfect life

  • He never sinned

  • He willingly died in our place

On the cross, Jesus paid the price that we could never pay ourselves.

God made a way for us to choose Him by first choosing us.
He took the punishment so that we could have the opportunity to accept His love.

Jesus rising from the dead shows that the payment was complete—and that new life is possible.
The resurrection is important because it proves that Jesus truly is who He said He is, God in human form, and that sin and death no longer have the final say. If Jesus had only died, it might have seemed like the end of the story. But by rising again, He showed that He has power over death itself.

The resurrection confirms that His sacrifice was enough, that forgiveness is real, and that we are not just saved from something—but invited into a new life with Him. It means we can have hope, not only for eternity, but for change, healing, and purpose right now.

Why can’t I just fix it myself?

We might think, “If I just do better, I’ll be okay.”

But the truth is:

  • We can’t erase our past

  • We can’t be perfect

  • We can’t earn our way back to God

That’s why Jesus had to step in. He did what we could never do on our own.

What do I need to do?

Salvation is a gift that we all can receive and choose for ourselves.

To receive salvation and choose to put Jesus as Lord over your life, you should:

  • Believe that Jesus died for your sins

  • Trust Him as the one who saves you

  • Accept the gift of forgiveness and new life

Romans 10: 9-13

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

What happens when I accept this?

When you accept Jesus:

  • Your sins are forgiven

  • Your relationship with God is restored

  • You are no longer defined by your past

  • You begin a new life with purpose and direction

Choosing Jesus is one of the most important decisions you can make. If you’re ready to take that step today and follow Him as the Lord and Savior of your life, or if you’re ready to reconnect and renew your relationship with Him, you can say this prayer, either out loud or in your heart:

“God, I know that I have sinned and I can’t fix it on my own.
Thank You for loving me and for sending Jesus to die in my place.
I believe that Jesus rose again and paid the price for my sins.
Today, I choose to trust You and accept Your forgiveness.
Come into my life, change my heart, and help me follow You.
Thank You for saving me and giving me new life.
Amen.”

  • What, if anything, makes it hard to believe or accept that?

  • Have you ever made a decision to follow Jesus before? If so, what did that look like?

  • If not, what thoughts or feelings come up when you think about making that decision?
