Introduction Into Deliverance Ministry

Deliverance is hindered by ignorance, fear, agreement with lies, or remaining bound to what Christ has already made a way to overcome.

Prescription: Practice surrender, renunciation, truth, and dependence on the authority of Jesus.

1) What is Deliverance?

Deliverance can be a confusing and controversial subject, but Scripture presents Jesus as One who brings freedom to people who are oppressed, tormented, and bound. The ministry of Jesus included not only preaching and healing, but also casting out demons and setting people free from spiritual oppression.

The purpose of deliverance is not to create fear or cause us to become obsessed with darkness. The focus is Jesus and the freedom He provides. Deliverance points us away from bondage and toward the authority, power, and victory of Christ.

One of the important questions surrounding deliverance is whether a Christian can experience demonic influence. Jake Kail's teaching makes a distinction between being possessed or owned by a demon and experiencing demonic influence or oppression. He argues that a Christian cannot be owned by a demon, while maintaining that demonic influence may affect areas of a believer's life, particularly the soul—the mind, will, and emotions. He also emphasizes that not every struggle or problem a Christian experiences is caused by demons.

This distinction is important because it keeps us from viewing every struggle through only one lens. Some battles involve our choices, wounds, thought patterns, relationships, circumstances, or physical and emotional exhaustion. Others, from the perspective of deliverance ministry, may involve spiritual oppression. Discernment is therefore essential.

The Bible repeatedly shows us that Jesus has authority over darkness.

In Mark 7, a Gentile woman comes to Jesus because her daughter is being tormented by an evil spirit. She does not give up when the conversation becomes difficult. Instead, she demonstrates humility, faith, and perseverance. Jesus ultimately delivers her daughter.

This gives us an important picture: God desires His children to experience freedom.

Deliverance is not about earning God's love. It is not about becoming good enough for God to help us. It is about recognizing that Jesus has already accomplished what we could never accomplish through our own strength.

Jesus demonstrated this authority throughout His ministry. He preached in the synagogues and cast out demons, showing that freedom from spiritual oppression was part of His ministry to God's people.

1. When you hear the word “deliverance,” what emotions or thoughts come to mind? Do you approach the idea with fear, confusion, hope, or something else? Why?

2. Where in your life do you most need to experience the freedom and authority of Jesus right now?

2) Freedom begins when we stop agreeing with what God never said about us.

Sometimes bondage is reinforced by lies we have believed:

“I will always be this way.”

“There is no way out.”

“This is just who I am.”

“I have to live with this forever.”

“God cannot forgive me.”

“I am powerless.”

But the gospel tells a different story.

Jesus came to set captives free.

When we recognize an area of bondage, we can bring it into the light instead of hiding it. We can confess what needs to be confessed, repent where repentance is needed, reject lies, forgive where forgiveness is needed, and submit ourselves to God.

James 4:7 gives us a simple pattern:

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Notice the order.

Submit.

Resist.

Freedom.

Our confidence is not found in our own ability to fight spiritual battles. Our confidence is found in Jesus Christ and His authority.

Deliverance is therefore not something to approach with fear.

It is something to approach with faith, humility, wisdom, and dependence upon God.

1. What is one lie you have believed about yourself, your past, your worth, or your future that may be keeping you from walking fully in the freedom God offers?

2. What would it look like for you to replace that lie with God's truth?

3) Ask God about Deliverance in Your Life

Ask God to reveal one area where you have felt spiritually bound, oppressed, fearful, or unable to move forward.

Bring that area honestly before Him.

Pray Today:

“Jesus, I surrender this area of my life to You. Reveal anything that I have agreed with that does not come from You. Give me discernment to recognize what is true, courage to reject what is false, and faith to receive the freedom You have provided. I belong to You. Lead me into freedom, healing, and truth.”

1. What is one area of your life that you feel God may be asking you to surrender to Him today?

2. What would it look like to trust Jesus with this area instead of continuing to carry it by yourself?

Bible Verses on Deliverance

Psalm 34:17

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.

Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 107:13–14

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives.

Mark 1:34

And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons.

Mark 7:27–29

And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.” And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”

This passage is especially important to this lesson because Jesus connects deliverance with the imagery of the children's bread. Kail's teaching emphasizes this as a picture of deliverance belonging to God's people.

Luke 4:18

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.

Colossians 1:13

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.

James 4:7

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Peter 5:8–9

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.

2 Corinthians 10:4–5

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

John 8:36

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before You recognizing that You are the God who brings freedom. I surrender every area of my life to You and ask You to reveal anything that has kept me bound. Give me discernment to recognize the difference between Your truth and the lies I have believed. Where I have agreed with fear, shame, rejection, bondage, or deception, help me to renounce those agreements and embrace Your truth. I submit myself completely to You and place my trust in the authority of Jesus Christ. Lead me into the freedom You have provided. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that there are areas of my life where I have felt trapped, oppressed, fearful, or unable to move forward. I bring those areas into Your light. I reject the lie that I am powerless and choose to believe that Jesus has authority over every power of darkness. Give me wisdom and discernment as I seek freedom. Teach me to surrender rather than strive, to trust rather than fear, and to stand firmly in the truth of Your Word. Amen.

Jesus, I belong to You. I surrender my mind, my will, my emotions, my body, and every part of my life to Your authority. Where I have believed lies, reveal Your truth. Where I have opened doors through sin, unforgiveness, fear, or unhealthy agreements, give me the courage to repent and turn toward You. Where there is spiritual oppression, bring freedom. Where there is fear, bring peace. Where there is confusion, bring truth. I do not place my confidence in my own strength. I place my confidence in You. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to lead me into complete freedom. Help me recognize that deliverance is not something I need to fear, but an expression of Your desire for Your children to walk in freedom. Give me humility to ask for help when I need it, wisdom to seek godly counsel, and courage to confront the things that have kept me bound. Teach me to remain close to Jesus after freedom comes, continually filling my life with Your Word, Your presence, and Your truth. Amen.

Declare Over Youself

I declare that I belong to Jesus Christ. I am not powerless, forgotten, or abandoned. Jesus is Lord over my life, and I choose to submit myself completely to Him.

I reject every lie that tells me I must remain bound. I choose truth over fear, freedom over bondage, and faith over intimidation.

I am learning to recognize what does not belong in my life and to bring it into the light. I trust the authority of Jesus and depend upon the Holy Spirit to lead me into freedom.

I declare that the Son has set me free, and I will walk in that freedom. I do not have to live under the weight of fear, shame, torment, or bondage.

I choose to surrender every area of my life to God. I will not allow fear of spiritual warfare to become greater than my faith in Jesus.

Christ is my authority, my refuge, and my deliverer.

I declare that I am a child of God, and my identity is secure in Christ. I refuse to agree with lies that keep me trapped in old patterns.

I release what God is asking me to release.

I repent where I need to repent.

I forgive where I need to forgive.

I reject what is contrary to God's truth.

And I choose to walk forward in the freedom Christ provides.

I declare that I will not live in fear of darkness because my confidence is in Jesus, the Light of the world.

I am learning to discern rather than fear.

I am learning to surrender rather than strive.

I am learning to stand rather than retreat.

I trust God to lead me into greater freedom, healing, truth, and wholeness.
