1) What Will I Do With the Gentleness God Is Growing in Me?
Learning about gentleness is only the beginning.
Jesus calls us to learn from Him.
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart...” — Matthew 11:29
Gentleness becomes real when it changes the way we respond.
It is practiced in conversations.
It is practiced when we are corrected.
It is practiced when someone disagrees with us.
It is practiced when we feel misunderstood.
It is practiced when our emotions are strong.
Gentleness is developed through repeated choices.
This week, practice choosing a gentle response when your natural reaction would be defensiveness or harshness.
2) This Week, Practice Gentleness in Five Ways
1. PAUSE
When something triggers you, do not immediately respond.
Take a breath.
Slow down.
Pray.
Ask yourself:
“Am I responding from the Spirit or from my emotional armor?”
A pause can create enough space for wisdom to replace reaction.
2. LISTEN
When someone gives you feedback or correction, practice listening completely before responding.
You do not have to agree immediately.
You do not have to explain yourself.
You do not have to defend your intentions.
Simply listen.
Ask:
“Is there something I can learn from this?”
Receiving correction does not mean accepting shame.
It means remaining teachable.
3. SPEAK WITH GENTLENESS
Proverbs 15:1 reminds us:
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
This week, pay attention to your tone.
Especially when you disagree.
Especially when you are frustrated.
Especially when you feel misunderstood.
Practice saying what is true without making your words unnecessarily sharp.
You can be honest and gentle at the same time.
4. RECEIVE CORRECTION
Your specific action for this lesson is simple:
Receive correction once without immediately defending yourself.
Listen.
Pause.
Thank the person for sharing.
Then take time to consider what they said.
You do not have to automatically agree.
You are simply practicing humility and openness.
5. PRACTICE SUBMITTED STRENGTH
Think about one situation where you normally become controlling, defensive, or harsh.
Ask:
“What would submitted strength look like here?”
Maybe it means speaking calmly.
Maybe it means setting a boundary.
Maybe it means listening.
Maybe it means apologizing.
Maybe it means walking away before the conversation becomes unhealthy.
Maybe it means allowing someone else to have the last word.
The goal is not to become passive.
The goal is to allow God's Spirit to direct your strength.
Reflection After Practice:
What happened when I paused before responding?
Was it difficult to receive correction without defending myself?
What emotions came up?
Did I notice any pride or defensiveness?
What did I learn about myself?
What did I learn about gentleness?
How did my response affect the interaction?
Where do I still need to practice submitted strength?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing me gentleness through Jesus.
Help me take His yoke upon me and learn from His humble and gentle heart.
Lord, I want gentleness to become more than something I understand.
I want it to become something I practice.
Help me pause before reacting.
Help me listen before defending myself.
Help me receive correction with humility.
Help me speak truth with grace.
Help me disagree without becoming harsh.
Help me establish boundaries without anger.
Help me control my emotions rather than allowing my emotions to control me.
When I feel rejected, remind me that my identity is secure in You.
When I feel criticized, remind me that correction can become an opportunity for growth.
When I feel defensive, remind me that I do not have to prove my worth.
Teach me submitted strength.
Help me become strong enough to remain gentle.
May my words become a tree of life.
May my responses reflect the heart of Christ.
May people experience Your grace through the way I communicate.
And may the Holy Spirit continue cultivating gentleness within me.
Amen.
Declare Over Yourself
I am deeply loved and accepted by God.
My identity is secure in Christ.
I do not have to live behind emotional armor.
I choose to lay down pride and defensiveness.
I choose humility.
I choose gentleness.
I choose to listen before responding.
I choose to receive correction without immediately defending myself.
I choose soft words over harsh reactions.
I can speak truth with love.
I can disagree with grace.
I can establish boundaries with gentleness.
I can be strong without being harsh.
I can be confident without being prideful.
I can receive correction without believing I am rejected.
I will pause before I react.
I will allow the Holy Spirit to guide my responses.
I will reflect the gentle and humble heart of Christ.
